A groundbreaking exploration of why we want what we want, and a toolkit for freeing ourselves from chasing unfulfilling desires.

Gravity affects every aspect of our physical being, but there's a psychological force just as powerful--yet almost nobody has heard of it. It's responsible for bringing groups of people together and pulling them apart, making certain goals attractive to some and not to others, and fueling cycles of anxiety and conflict. In Wanting, Luke Burgis draws on the work of French polymath René Girard to bring this hidden force to light and reveals how it shapes our lives and societies.

According to Girard, humans don't desire anything independently. Human desire is mimetic--we imitate what other people want. This affects the way we choose partners, friends, careers, clothes, and vacation destinations. Mimetic desire is responsible for the formation of our very identities. It explains the enduring relevancy of Shakespeare's plays, why Peter Thiel decided to be the first investor in Facebook, and why our world is growing more divided as it becomes more connected.

Wanting also shows that conflict does not arise because of our differences--it comes from our sameness. Because we learn to want what other people want, we often end up competing for the same things. Ignoring our large similarities, we cling to our perceived differences.

Drawing on his experience as an entrepreneur, teacher, and student of classical philosophy and theology, Burgis shares tactics that help turn blind wanting into intentional wanting--not by trying to rid ourselves of desire, but by desiring differently. It's possible to be more in control of the things we want, to achieve more independence from trends and bubbles, and to find more meaning in our work and lives.

The future will be shaped by our desires. Wanting shows us how to desire a better one.

Shows us what really matters in life (and why) and the real human nature with its nasty tendencies (and how to overcome them). Eye-opening, priceless, a must read!

If you are already familiar with Girard’s ideas and wants some deep new development from them, you will likely be frustrated by the book: it doesn’t really provide any new groundbreaking reworking of the theory. However, it applies the concepts really well to day-to-day situations. The book shines when the author is retelling his own story and how the understanding of the concepts he describes helped him to reframe his actions, as well as when he provides some practical tips on how to mitigate the bad effects of mimetic desire. When you couple this with the clear and succinct explanation of Girard’s concepts you get a really good book for what it intends to be. The book also contains a “roadmap” for further reading once the reader is through with this book and wants to delve deeper into the topic.

My minor criticism is that sometimes the author goes too far in trying to bend facts to fit theory. Some real-world examples on how mimetic desire theory can explain decisions and stories of some characters seem farfetched. I also felt the book drags a little bit in the last third and felt some of it could be abbreviated with no major loss of content.

5,0 de 5 estrelas Fantastic Entry Point for Mimetic Theory

Unlike many pop psychology/business books Wanting starts at first principles and provides a useful and thoughtful background to the core insight central to the book—the Girardian theory of mimesis. I particularly enjoyed the introductory discussion of how children learn through the process of watching and copying as compared to animals where it is more often innate instinct and behavior I found it very useful in providing a foundation for the theory. When explaining these ideas to others I have returned often to that example as the bedrock for my explanation. Afterall, if one assumes this copying as a method for learning continues past childhood it is easy to see how somebody like Girard could reach many of the conclusions he does—although I am not sure that is exactly how he came to these conclusions, still you get the point.

Luke Burgis also adds onto Girards theory and importantly differentiates himself from Thiel in a number of ways. I found this important as Thiel, who I greatly admire, is the most famous proponent of mimetic theory today and often the first source for which people encounter mimetic theory. People tend to interpret Thiels version of mimetic theory as "The Mimetic Theory". Burgis makes his own interpretation clear and provides an alternative view in a clean layout with interesting anecdotes. I will add that I found the categorization of thick and thin desires less useful than others may have but recognize they are a practical way of recognizing mimetic theory and implementing it within your own life.

Overall it's a fun, quick read and an excellent introduction to a difficult philosophical idea which Burgis is clearly intimately familiar with.

Know Thyself was true then, it's even truer now. Understanding mimetic desire is key to understand oneself and understanding society as a whole. The book is a page turner, I read it in 3 days and will likely read it again before the end of the year. Just like his Substack, Luke's writing style is practical, yet insightful, full of examples from the past and today's events to help us understand. The chapter of Scapegoat is a weird eye opener...that's all I'll say about that.

I absolutely recommend the book, you will love it and offer plenty of copies as Christmas gifts, like I am planning to do (mimetic desire anyone? :) )

Luke Burgis' book (and further reading recommendations through other channels) have set me down on a rare path to understanding the functioning of man and human kind, society, social dynamics - what Luke writes is instinctually sound and familiar, and helps clarify the picture.

Mimetic desire is a beneficial concept to learn for various reasons, and starting with Luke's book gives a nice soft landing into the topic.

The book is written well and stays to the point, no useless bloat to get the page count up - which is rare these days, when it comes to those kinds of topics.

Thanks for writing it, I'm sure there are many among us who are waiting for more :)
